Garment Styler from Cochenille Designs is pattern software for the Macintosh. Custom sizes are built in or you can use your own size sheet. There are four choices: style, neck, armhole and shoulder. Options include: crew, boat, etc. for necklines. Instructions are given for both hand and machine knitting. Stitch Painter can be used in conjunction with the program. There are Windows and Amiga versions. Get the June issue of Fashion Knitting where Susan Lazear shows how to design a sweater. The program pre-release is $70; later it will be $85 US. Knitware Design Knitware Design is for both hand and machine knitters and quickly creates knitting patterns for babies, children, adults, toys and pets. For IBM PCs and compatibles it consists of two design programs: sweaters and critter clothes.It will allow you to: design a custom sweater, top, or vest, or to design clothes for a doll, bear or pet. Use your yarn and gauge/tension, select a combination of style and size, display a schematic diagram of your design and print the pattern instructions. Measurements are in inches or centimeters. The amount of yarn required can be calculated. It is now available for Windows95/98/NT.

Stitch Painter gold version is now available. It contains all the features of the standard version but includes symbol and texture palettes and it calculates stitches. Sweater Maker is a shareware program for machine knitters. Size, tension, poullover options are entered and it prints out a pattern for machine knitting. It is available from: Seedling Software, 8 Hillcrest Heights Lane, Mount Vernon, IA 52314. Requirements: PC compatible with 256K, CGA, EGA or VGA graphics. Cost: $49.95 or whatever you might feel it is worth.

EasyGrapher 97 ($99) and easyGrapher Professional II ($299) are the latest needlework designing programs from Davis computer Services, Inc. located at P.O. Box 750141, New Orleans, LA 70175 (telephone (800) 231-3480 or (504) 899-9706, email: kdavisjr@worldnet.att.net). Both can produce professional quality graphs either from an original design or from converting a scanned picture. They can also read files in 30 formats. EasyGrapher 97 has all the features needed to create cross stitch graphs, including cut and paste, partial stitches, French knots, automatic graphing of typed words, and a true multi-olevel undo. EasyGrapher Professional II has many additional features for developing more complex graphs for needlepoint, hardanger, Bargello and other needlework graphs. It also has geatures to aid in publishing graphs including exporting graphs to desktop publishing programs. Both require Windows 3.1 or 95. MSD CrossStitch Designer v. 3.0 is PC DOS software compatible with Windows 3.1 and Windows 95. The new version includes 30 new DMC colors and a new stitch counter. The program, for novices or experts, is a full-featured paint program that creates easy to read charts with symbol and color code legends. Up to 120 colors per image out of 390 colors in the DMC line can be used. It prints to a laser, deskjet or dot matrix printer. Color ImageImport allows scanning and importing capabilities. It will convert 256 color PCX files top DMC floss colors. Any electronic photo or image can be used to create a photograph in floss. It is available from: MasterStitch Designs, Inc. P.O. Pattern Maker and Pattern Maker Pro are two outstanding programs from Hobbyware for cross-stitch designers. (Hobbyware's shareware program, Cross-Stitch Designer, for $35 is also available.) Pattern Maker and Pattern Maker Pro enable Windows users to display multiple canvases, to cut and paste between them, to import graphics in several formats and to control printing designs. There is a comprehensive palette of symbols, ways to make printouts look professional and can print out statistics of the design including the number of stitches of each color and the amount of floss required. Pattern Maker is $59.95 US and the Pro version is $119.95. Requirements: 386, Windows 3.1, VGA or SVGA, 4mg RAM are the minimum needed. PCX2CCS formerly GIF2XTS. This new program by Chris O'Donnell creates Cross Stitch Charts from PCX files rather than from GIF files. It is identical to version 5.8 of GIF2XTS. It features DOS and Windows versions, an image size of 640 x 480, 256 different colors/symbols, the ability to add or delete symbols from the grid, clipping, scaling and printing the image, and assigning DMC colors to symbols. Screen resolution is dependent on the monitor used, but can be as high as 1024 x 768. Registered users receive: the program to allow user to associate palette colors with DMC colors, a copy of program without reminders, notification of minor upgrade patches, printed copy of manual, library of ABC's and 123's, all 360 DMC colors mapped to RGB values, shareware version of graphics workshop included and program to create your own RGB-to-DMC mapping. Demo disk cost is $6 US ($8 Canadian) and the cost for registered users is $40 US ($55 Canadian). All costs include shipping, handling and taxes.

Stitch Crafts Gold is the newest Stitch Grapher program for Windows from Compucrafts located at P.O. Box 6326, Lincoln Cntr., MA 01773-6326. (Telephone: 1-800-263-0045 or (508) 263-8007; fax: (508) 264-0619). It can read all of the old Stitch Grapher shape screens and projects and convert them to the new Stitch Crafts Gold format. Designed from scratch, the program is the result of 2.5 years of work. There are more colors, symbols and features including backstitches, fractional stitches french knots, satin stitches and high resolution color printing. Point, click and drag to place symbols on a grid, click undo if you change your mind. As you experiment with colors, position and motif orientation, the chart key is automatically maintained. Over 1,000 colors from DMC, Anchor and J&P Coats are pre-programmed and cross-referenced. Up to 120 symbols can be used in a single project. You can also custom design your own symbols. There are several zoom levels and color modes for display and printing. The grid style and fabric color can be configured. The clipboard allows design elements to be transferred between multiple open projects. Symbols can be automatically changed and chart key colors can be merged. A chart creation program called SCWGrab can convert any BMP, GIF, JPG, PCX, TIF or screen display directly into a Stich Crafts Gold project file, complete with the DMC chart key. Any size chart can be created. Project size and number of projects open at once is dependent on computer memory. Cost is $190; upgrade price from Stitch Grapher is $100.

ColorDesign 1.2 for the Mac is a tool for two-dimensional surface design including everything from quilts to tiles. Shapes can be layered transparently onto existing designs creating harmonious color combinations. The weight of the transparency can be controlled as well as grids, symmetry, shapes, and colors. Quilt designs can be generated randomly or they can be fully controlled. Parameters can be set and the program can generate. It does not include yardage calculation or a quilt design library, but it lets you focus on the creative design. Cost is $89.95 US plus $3.00 shipping and handling ($6.00 for international orders). Quilt-Pro for Windows allows for applique, pictorial, medallion and diagonal quilt designs. Quilting stencils can be designed and printed. Yardage (including borders, sashes and backing) can be calculated. Blocks, quilts, templates and fabric calculations can be printed. Notes can be added to projects, paper foundations with numbers and seam allowances can be printed. Quilts up to 400 blocks, 10 borders and 10 medallion rings can be created.Some of the blocks that can be created include: square, rectangular, curved two patch, applique, hexagon, diamond, mariners compass and 8 pointed star blocks. Its drawing tools assist with creating blocks. Colors can be changed instantly and new palettes created. More than 250 fabric patterns can be selected each in three different colorways. QuiltSOFT for Windows and Macintosh is a quilt design program. Quilts can be created with hundreds of blocks, including applique. Yardage can be calculated, templates printed with or without seam allowances, paper foundation piecing blocks printed, colors mixed and 12 different file formats imported. CADTERNS Patternmaking Program generates custom slopers enabling users to create custom patterns with their computer and an entry level CAD program and printer. Skirt, pant, bodice, blouse and sheath are individually drafted according to user input of height, bust and hip measurements. Custom slopers can be drafted in seconds for any female figure ranging in height from 4'1" to 6'8" with bust and hip measurements from 29" to 60". The program interfaces with either AutoSketch or AutoCAD which enables the user to print or plot custom patterns for wardrobe basics. The user can style slopers using the CAD program and create a variety of patterns for custom fitted garments. Dress Shop Designer Video was created after users of Dress Shop 2.0 available from LivingSoft, showed off how they used the program to combine and change patterns only slightly to create totally different garments. Joan Reid, an avid user of Dress Shop, was contracted to demonstrate 17 new styles and related garments in the video. Dress Shop 2.0 - Mac version was released April, 1996. The Mac version has some new features not in the present IBM version. Expansions, A Stokes Pattern Generator by John S. Stokes III. is a design shareware program for the Mac that generates a variety of black and white patterns. After entering starting point, direction of lines, rotation angles, etc. the patterns can be created and modified. The program allows selection of standard sized or custom fitted patterns for Princess style dress, waistless dress, pleated trousers, basic blouse, a-line skirt, one dart skirt and apron. Colors can be flat, stand or two piece. Pattern pieces can be modified, seam allowance varied, fullness and pleats added, transfer darts, lengthen or shorten pieces, make facings and create yokes. Fabric requirements can be determined. Pattern pieces can be printed out. Available for Windows and Macintosh.

Pattern is an MS-DOS shareware program that manages your patterns by topic, subject, page number, etc. $25. It is available from the sewing library in the Fibercrafts Forum on CompuServe.

Symmetry is a computer aided apparel design program now in version 1.3. It is CAD software for pattern development. Custom pattern drafting and manipulation, grading and fabric layout. Fiberworks PCW, weaving design software, is now available in version 4. Version 4 is available for Windows and Mac (DOS versions also still available). Three levels are offered: Bronze (level 1) which is an entry level drafting program for up to 16 shafts, 32 treadles and includes block substitution, float search, blended drafts, weave as drawn in, turned drafts, special display for double weave, bound weave and rep. The bronze level is a design program only. Silver (level 2) for the serious weaver handles up to 48 shafts, 64 treadles and includes sketchpad mode and fabric analysis. Other graphic formats (TIFF, PCX, PICT) can be imported and exported. Loom drivers are available for many computer driven looms. Gold (level 3) available in 1998, handles 96 shafts and treadles and will include drawloom features, painted warp among others. LaceWeave for Windows 3.1 or Windows 95 is prototype utility software that will read weaving files created by other programs and then redraw the patterns in lace mode. Currently the program is written only for WeavePoint files, versions 1-4, but other programs will soon be compatible perhaps using the WIF (weaving information file) format. The LaceWeave simulation of a drawdown shows what the cloth will look like when actually woven-showing how the threads relax and move towards or away from each other. It does not show color, yarn twist, fibre type etc. LaceWeave's sole purpose is to show the actual behavior of woven yarn.

Patternland Weave Simulator for Windows is now available in version 6.05. Requires Windows 3.1 or Windows 95. The mouse can be used as a pencil, eraser or paint brush to draw using millions of colors. Screen interlacement and display changes simultaneously as the draft is edited. 3D adjustable warp and weft bending interlacement creates a simulation of the cloth scalable in epi (ends per inch) or epc (ends per centimeter). Numeric or graphic styles with scaleable graphpaper. Publication quality printouts. WIF data format to enable sharing with other programs. Pattern analysis, block substitution, and network drafting are available. A design editor is available for tapestry and fiberarts. WeaveMaker One is available for both Windows and Macintosh environments. Designs for both treadle and dobby looms can be created: 4-32 harnesses and 1000 ends and picks. Includes automatic repeats, custom repeats, 3-D views of the the design, float histograms and an automatic yarn conversion table. Images can be exported as TIFF files. Includes manual and tutorial. WeavePoint is now available in version 4.2 for Windows. It can be used for treadle or dobby looms and up to 80 harnesses. Many views of fabric available. It has added a Project Planner, a layout sheet for costing and calculating, network drafting features. Fabric analysis, length of floats, percentage of color or yarn and number of layers. It automatically creates Network drafts from profiles. Compression feature for double or complex weaves shows how design looks woven. Requirements: 386 or better, 1mg RAM, VGA, 40mg hard drive space. Braid Runner is software for Kumihimo braid. Derke and Rosalie Neilson of Orion's Plumage in Milwaukie, Oregon are the creators of the program which enables the exploration of design possibilities for fourteen different eight-braid elements. The color palette can be changed, cycle color and global color allow thousands of design possibilities to be explored and the ability to design multiple braids at once.
